Principles for Effective and Equitable STEM Teaching: Insights from a recent report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
In January 2025, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine released a 400-page volume that synthesized and reported on over two decades of research on effective and equitable classroom practices. That's a lot to read, but don't worry, your friends at the CTL have done the work for you! We will provide a quick summary that focuses on seven principles of effective instruction and do a deeper dive into two of the principles: How students diverse interests can be leveraged to enhance learning and How identity and sense of belonging shape STEM teaching and learning. We will have an opportunity to reflect on the past semester and share specific strategies for implementing some of these principles in semesters ahead.
