From Orbit to Outcrop: Unveiling Mars and Earth’s Geologic Secrets with Remote Sensing and Surface Techniques
Icy and volcanic terrains host records of climate, surface processes, and geologic evolution of planetary bodies. Such records are encoded in the morphology, internal stratigraphy, and composition of the surface and subsurface, and can be deciphered by integrating a diverse set of remote sensing techniques with in-situ and analog geophysical measurements. In this talk, I will show how the combination of orbital radar sounding, visible and infrared imagery, along with terrestrial geophysical techniques can reveal the geologic and climate history of a variety of Martian terrains, including polar ice caps, debris-covered glaciers, and volcanic plains. Finally, I will discuss how emerging technologies can enable the next generation of radar systems to explore a wide range of bodies across the solar system.
