Evidence for the formation and destruction of cratonic lithosphere will be presented, using insights from studies in Tanzania and North China to infer the processes and properties that influence craton preservation.  A new model for cratonic mantle lithosphere formation via ascent of buoyant plumes of residual peridotite will be presented.
