Special Topics in the Geosciences

EARTH, ENVIRONMENTAL & PLANETARY SCIENCE 500

Content varies each time course is offered, as announced by Department. With permission of the Chair, course may be repeated for credit. SP25 Topic: Graduate Geochemistry This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles of thermodynamics and kinetics and their applications to geological systems, with a focus on high-temperature processes. Students will learn how to apply thermodynamic and kinetic concepts to understand mineral stability, phase equilibria, critical phenomena in geology, melt-rock interactions, and the evolution of magmatic and metamorphic systems. The course will also cover the interpretation of whole-rock geochemical data, including data visualization, uncertainty analysis, elemental ratios, and the behavior of key trace elements.
