Subduction initiation and island arcs growth: Examples from the Philippines

John Encarnacion, Professor of Geology Earth, Environmental, and Geospatial Science, Saint Louis University

What are the ways that subduction initiates? What are the processes accompanying the development of mature island arcs that eventually contribute to the growth of continental crust? In this talk, I will present what we have learned from geological and geochronological studies in the Philippines over the past two to three decades. The Philippines is a tectonically complex archipelago at the junction of three major tectonic plates. It consists of island arcs, ophiolites, microcontinents, and deep sedimentary basins that preserve evidence for multiple subduction episodes and multiple periods of rifting and ophiolite generation. These processes provide insight into the growth of a mature island arc and how subduction may initiate.
