Undergraduate Student Special Event: Distinguished Alumna Ruth DeFries

Musings on a Path to a Healthy Planet and Healthy People

Undergraduate students majoring in an environmentally-focused field in Arts & Sciences at Washington University are invited to a special event with Prof. Ruth DeFries, an international leader in sustainable development and human impacts on ecosystems. In this presentation, Prof. DeFries will share her experiences and insights from her long and impactful career seeking to create a healthy planet for healthy people.

Prof. DeFries will be visiting campus as a recipient of the Arts & Sciences Distinguished Alumni Award. She completed undergraduate studies at Washington University in 1976 and is now the Denning Family Professor of Sustainable Development at Columbia University. Prof. DeFries is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the recipient of a MacArthur Foundation genius grant. Her research uses satellite imagery and field studies to determine how food and resource needs are altering land use throughout the tropics.
